AVATAR

Earth-Moon-Earth, 2007, installation sonore.

With Earth-Moon-Earth, Paterson employs old Earth-Moon-Earth radio communications technology to send the score of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata from the Earth to the Moon. The lunar surface reflects the waves incompletely, absorbing some fragments into its shadows, losing others in its craters, and leaving still others to drift through space forever. Back on Earth, the Romantic piece is translated into a new, altered composition, the disparities and gaps becoming intervals and rests for silent contemplation, interrupting the now nearly unrecognizable melody.
