Curatorial Dialogue: Initiative Encounters between AGAVF and Manif d'art

Manif d'art and AGAVF are delighted to invite you to a casual 5 to 7 gathering with the young curators of the eleventh Quebec City Biennial and the 5th cohort of AGAVF's Curatorial Incubator. This meeting follows a week of reflection by AGAVF in Winnipeg and Saint-Boniface in October 2023, as well as visits to the exhibitions of the young curators of the Quebec City Biennial.

At this event, which will take place in a friendly atmosphere, two consecutive 45-minute roundtable discussions will be organized. Each table will bring together two "Incubator participants" from the 5th cohort with two Young Curators from Manif d’art. The format will be dynamic and interactive, thus fostering enriching exchanges among participants.

In the form of a discussion led by Caroline Boileau and Julia Caron Guillemette, we will cover a variety of topics, including the curatorial projects of each participant, the different roles curators can play, as well as the curatorial methodologies explored by each participant. Come immerse yourself in this dynamic dialogue on curatorial initiatives, share your experiences, and mutually inspire each other to shape the future of curatorial practice.

Adoption of the new law on the status of the artist: What does this change concretely?

On June 3, 2022, a historic event took place in the field of culture. After decades of waiting, the reform of the artist's status carried by former Minister Nathalie Roy was finally adopted unanimously by the National Assembly. Why was there a need to change the law?

It should be noted that before the adoption of Bill S-32.1, two separate laws governed the minimum conditions for artists in Quebec since the 1980s. The first applied to artists in the performing arts and audiovisual sector, and the second, much less protective for artists, applied to writers and visual artists.

But concretely, what are the main changes brought about by this reform?

To decipher this law together, RAAV invites you to a one-hour meeting to equip you, explain the modifications to the law on the professional status of artists (Bill S-32.1), and its impacts on the new roles of RAAV. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session to answer all questions.

“What Dreams in Us”: Rethinking Sleep, Night, and Expression

Manif d'art and the Chair of Philosophy in the Contemporary World at Laval University invite you to the third and final conference of the series, presented within the central exhibition. Join us for a captivating discussion led by Patrick Turmel in a relaxed atmosphere from 5 pm to 7 pm at this 5 to 7 event with Donald Landes.

Donald Landes is a philosophy professor at Laval University since 2015. Specializing in phenomenology, existentialism, and contemporary French thought, he publishes on diverse topics such as perception, habit, temporality, art, and responsibility. At the heart of his research lies what he calls the "paradoxical logic of expression," a concept developed in his book "Merleau-Ponty and the Paradoxes of Expression." His current book projects mobilize this concept to address metaphysical questions and contribute to debates in the field of art generated by artificial intelligence. An internationally renowned translator, he has published new translations into English of two major works of twentieth-century continental philosophy: Maurice Merleau-Ponty's "Phenomenology of Perception" (2012) and Henri Bergson's "Creative Evolution" (2023). Landes is also an artist, working with watercolors, oils, and other mixed media techniques, blending his artistic practice with his philosophical research.
