Se déployant naturellement dans des environnements du quotidien – plages, piscines creusées, ports et autres lieux au bord de l’eau –, les œuvres de pastrana santiago transforment en résistance la paresse, l’immobilité et le refus de produire face à la contrainte temporelle incessante imposée par le capitalisme.
Suspendue dans le hall de l’Espace Quatre Cents, une banderole porte l’inscription YOUR ISLAND HERE. Comme une banderole publicitaire traînée par un avion survolant une plage, on peut l’observer d’en bas. L’œuvre met ainsi l’accent sur le langage de la colonisation : le pouvoir des énoncés performatifs à transformer les lieux d’accès à l’eau.
Since the last century, coastal communities have been disproportionately affected by climate change with sea-level rise and increased storm surges caused by melting polar ice caps. Those who live away from the coast often witness this devastation at a safe remove, making its impacts on the human body less tangible.
Baliza (2023) captures pastrana santiago free-floating in an ocean-blue-coloured pool, wrapping herself, in a mesmerizing choreography, with two banners that read “aquí había una isla” (here was an island) and “your island here.” Produced at the Rauschenberg Artist Residency in Captiva, Florida, the performance reflects on colonial conceptions of territory and the commodification of land and water through rampant development of waterfront hotels and tourist attractions. These banners, which can be viewed from above—like a message written in the sand—or from below—like an advertising banner dragged behind a plane at the beach—focus on the language of colonization—the power of performative utterances to transform sites of access to water. By flipping the horizon line in the video, with the surface appearing below pastrana santiago and not above, the action reflects a feeling of disorientation, a paradigm shift, and the usurping of the picture-postcard imagery associated with the “perfect beach vacation.”
