A new generation of artists to discover
This exhibition highlights a selection of grant projects from the fifteenth cohort of the Première Ovation program – Visual Arts, Media Arts and Fine Crafts.
The complete body of work from all grant recipients is featured in a catalogue co-published by the City of Québec and Manif d’art. The publication showcases recent projects by numerous emerging artists and curators from Québec City.
Curator Laurence Duchesne contributes a text introducing the work of ten artists from the 2023–2024 cohort. Their projects illustrate the theme Gentle Temperatures. Alongside the catalogue, this selection also takes the form of a large-format outdoor photo exhibition, which will travel through various public spaces in Québec City for about a year.
TEMPÉRATURES DOUCES
There is an ambivalence to gentle temperatures: at once the promise of respite and the sign of disruption. They suggest a climate in transition, a state suspended between balance and imbalance. Winters with blurred contours—too mild to be reassuring—reveal a world in flux.
This meteorological phenomenon becomes a lens through which to observe our relationship to transformation, memory and time. Gentleness here is not neutral: it is charged, layered, porous.
It calls us to slow down and feel differently. Artistic climates—both poetic and lucid—offer responses to today’s challenges. They invite us to affirm our fragilities, our sense of belonging, and our shared futures.
— Laurence Duchesne
An exhibition in dialogue with the urban space
Presented on large-format photo panels, the exhibition travels through several public locations across Québec City. It brings into everyday life a visually powerful and socially engaged selection of works by emerging artists.
