Giorgia Volpe

With humor and gravity, Giorgia Volpe observes how our simplest gestures reveal deep social tensions. In this video work installed as public art, she invites us to reconsider the space we inhabit, its uses, and what it says about our collective vulnerabilities. © Credit Giorgia Volpe

Description

Giorgia Volpe’s work often brings us to observe a well-known social, cultural, or political phenomenon from a new perspective. In the surrealist scene that she presents, two performers tap the ceiling of a room with long sticks to establish a form of communication. Dressed in winter clothing but indoors, they excavate their surroundings as one might probe a newly frozen lake in winter. But instead of being out on the ice, they perform an archaeology of the absurd with their gestures. Volpe’s intervention, at first glance humorous and light, remarks on the prevalence of unoccupied spaces in Québec City and the housing crisis currently plaguing the province and country. Presented in a context in which certain people looking in might have little or no access to housing during the coldest winter months, the video is also about the inability to provide shelter to those in need.
